The Doctrine of Water Baptism “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, of the doctrine of baptisms, laying on of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.” (Hebrews 6:1-2) 1. There are basically three types of baptism available according to scripture: Baptism into the body of Christ at the new birth. (Romans 6:3,4; I Corinthians 12:13; Galatians 3:27-28) Baptism into water after the new birth. (Matthew 3:7-8, Acts 16:32-34, Acts 22:16) Baptism with the Holy Ghost. (Acts 1:5; Acts 2:4; Acts 2:38) 2. What is Water Baptism? Water baptism is outward evidence of what happened at the new birth. (II Corinthians 5:17; Matthew 28:18-19) Water baptism does not save us. Only believing and confessing that Jesus died and rose again for our justification saves us. (Romans 10:9-10) 3. Why must I be baptized? Jesus commanded us to be baptized. (Matthew 28:18-19) Obedience always bears fruit. (Isaiah 1:19) Jesus is our example. (Luke 3:21-23) 4. How am I to be baptized? The word “baptize” means to immerse; to place completely and totally under. Scripturally, we are to be totally immersed in water. (Acts 8:26-40) Attire Men Wear what you are going to be baptized in to the church. Wear clothing that can get wet. Long shorts are acceptable; a shirt must be worn. Please do not wear white.
